Around this time most of us are seen running around, putting up the national flag, decorating the streets and our home with jhandian (mini flags) and plastic flags with a straw as a holder, why? Because 14th August is right here around our heads! But, such is the irony of adulthood that now all can do right now is type and click incessantly on desktops/laptops, iPads, smartphones, and any latest innovation of technology that has been bestowed upon us.
Most of us, who are in their 20s and live overseas can recall a starkly contrasting independence day than what we witness nowadays. All thanks to social media! That has not only transformed the way we communicate with people but also affected the way we may express our happiness, patriotism, and freedom. For young adults like us 14th August would be sleeping in late, or just upload a status wishing happy independence to everyone out there.
I still remember the feeling of patriotism and the national songs being played in the street and little kids wanting to start their morning by putting on their best independence day t shirt. Contrary to having our faces brightly painted with flags on our cheeks, the trend has become more about who has the swankiest green display pictures this year. Rather than having the magnificent Pakistani green flags waving from every house in the street and the street across, it’s now about who the social media race of who has the best cover photo. Surprisingly enough when we should be busy painting our town green with a sense of patriotism overdrive and decorating it with zest, it has become about spending the day shopping on Azadi discounts and searching for independence day sale 2019. Yes, we still have sales and to check them out visit The Warehouse.
Let’s cherish some blast from the past and see how we celebrated Independence Day back in the golden archives of memories. And try to celebrate it like this now too.
Getting the perfect flag painted on our cheeks
The Independence Day morning started with of course the national anthem and the President addressing the nation and explaining the significance this day holds. But, once the breakfast was over kids would rush to anyone with a paintbrush and green-white poster paints to get their face painted with the flag.
Putting up the Green Decorations and Jhandiyan
Decorating everything in possession with green flags, lights, and little straw flags so everyone knows it’s officially Independence Day!
All Huddled up in One car
Hands down this are one of the most profound memories I have from the past. All cousins and friends dressed up in green and going to visit the historic monuments and brightly lit up buildings while jamming to Dil Dil Pakistan!
Secretly Wishing to get the biggest Flag displayed on your terrace
Remaining in competition with your neighbors to get the biggest flags when they could care less! Those were the best days.
